Multiple lawmakers have informed SuperTalk Mississippi News that House Speaker Philip Gunn announced to his colleagues during a Wednesday caucus meeting that he would not be seeking reelection in District 56 in 2023.
Gunn, R-Clinton, was first elected to the legislature in 2004. In 2012, he became the first Republican speaker in Mississippi since Reconstruction. His current term is set to end on January 2, 2024.
