After a delay on Monday, the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) is reporting 16,484 news cases of COVID-19 from January 7-9.

The latest report brings the state’s total number of cases to 603,031. With the confirmation of eight additional deaths, 10,543 Mississippians have passed away from the virus. There are currently 284 ongoing outbreaks in long-term care facilities.

According to State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs, ICU space has been pushed beyond its capacity due to the Omicron variant’s surge.

“Severity of illness is less with Omicron – but given the staggering number of cases and staffing challenges – ICU space has been pushed beyond its capacity,” Dobbs wrote on Twitter.
