Attorney General Lynn Fitch has announced Mississippi’s participation in Operation Robocall Roundup, a multi-state effort to crack down on illegal robocalls across the country.
The initiative is part of the Anti-Robocall Litigation Task Force, a coalition of 51 attorneys general working together to identify, investigate, and penalize companies enabling fraudulent calls. As part of the operation, Fitch has sent warning letters to 37 voice providers accused of failing to comply with federal robocall prevention rules.
“These calls and texts are more than a nuisance; they are often the gateway to scams,” Fitch said. “In June alone, people received more than 4.5 billion robocalls nationwide, and we’re taking decisive steps to hold the companies behind them accountable. I will continue to stand up for Mississippi consumers and protect them from these unsolicited and potentially harmful calls.”
According to Fitch’s office, the targeted providers have not complied with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requirements, such as:
- Responding to government traceback requests.
- Registering in the FCC’s Robocall mitigation database.
- Filing a plan outlining steps to reduce illegal robocalls.
By ignoring these rules, officials say, the companies have allowed robocallers to access their phone networks and make fraudulent calls to other providers until they reach consumers.
The task force has also notified 99 downstream providers that do business with the noncompliant companies, warning them that they are working with “bad actors” who are unwilling to follow the law.
The FCC is stepping in as well. This week, the commission announced it will remove seven of the offending providers from its mitigation database – effectively cutting them off from the nation’s phone network, since other companies will no longer be allowed to route their calls.
