Proceeds from the MS Lottery have exceeded expectations, hitting $84 million last week with four months left to go in the fiscal year. Tom Shaheen, President of the Mississippi Lottery Corporation believes if they stay on pace, our state is looking at a total of $115 million.
The first $80 million in lottery proceeds is earmarked for improvements to roads and bridges, after that the revenue goes to education. So, if Shaheens’ estimate is correct, the total for education would be $35 million.
“In my years in the business, I was pleasantly surprised by the numbers here, ” Shaheen stated. “One, I think a lot of people thought it might not do as well because you already have a couple border states with lotteries, and you have casinos. I can’t say for sure, but I don’t know of any lottery that started up with casinos already in place. Maybe New Mexico.”
