Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU) has announced plans to forgive over $2.3 million in student debt for those enrolled from the fall of 2021 until the spring of 2023.
The funding allows the university to apply financial aid to the balances of students enrolled at any point on or after March 13, 2020.
According to MVSU officials, the program will assist students who did not receive funds during the first round of balance forgiveness in August 2021. Students whose balances were cleared during the first round of balance forgiveness will not be eligible for these funds.
“We want to assure that our students know that they and their education is a top priority,” MVSU President Jerry Briggs, Sr. said. “By using the funds available to us from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund, the University is supporting students in their current situations in pursuit of their academic goals.”
With the clearance of balances, students will have financial holds including tuition, fees, and fines removed from their accounts.
In addition, the program will allow students enrolled from Fall 2021 until Spring 2023 with an unpaid balance to MVSU to obtain an official transcript.
This marks the second time the university has offered to erase debt for students with semester balances, with the previous program forgiving over $1.5 million in August 2021.
