Class-action lawsuits have been filed against Family Dollar amid the investigations of a rat infestation at a Family Dollar distribution plant in Arkansas.
Over 400 Family Dollar stores were closed on February 19 after an FDA report released that the infestation could have potentially contaminated products.
The possibly contaminated products included human and pet foods, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and cosmetics.
A more recent report revealed that company officials were aware of the infestation since January 2020, with over 3,000 rats captured between March 2021 to January 2022.
Family Dollar issued a voluntary recall of the potentially contaminated products in February, but multiple class-action lawsuits in three states have been filed since.
Several Mississippi customers filed a class action complaint against the company on February 24, accusing Family Dollar of breaking state and federal consumer laws.
The plaintiffs also claim that the company “knew, should have known or was reckless in not knowing, that the products were exposed to salmonella and other infectious diseases due to the rodent infestation.”
Additional lawsuits have been filed in two other states as stores across Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee were impacted.
