Mississippi’s unemployment rate has reached a record low in state history for the third month in a row after totaling 3.2 percent in May.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), Mississippi has continued to make state history by reporting a lower rate of unemployment after totaling 3.4 percent during the previous month.
In April, 14 other states had a decrease in unemployment rates, while 36 and the District of Columbia reported stable numbers. Compared to May of 2022, 17 states had jobless rate decreases, eight states and the District of Columbia had increases, and 25 had little change.
Now, the BLS has released that 11 states throughout the nation have experienced a lower rate of unemployment while 39 states and the District of Columbia have reported stable numbers.
“Mississippi’s unemployment rate is at an all-time low because we’re making a record investment in Mississippians and creating thousands of high-paying jobs around the state,” Governor Tate Reeves said. “Whether it’s in education or economic development, Mississippi is rising up the ranks. Our state is growing stronger every day and we have momentum.”
The BLS added that the national unemployment rate, which is currently at 3.7 percent, had little changes within the past few months and last year.
Nebraska, South Dakota, and New Hampshire had the lowest jobless rate throughout the nation in May, with each state’s unemployment totaling in at 1.9 percent. The states with the next lowest rates of 2.1 percent were North Dakota and Vermont, followed by Alabama at 2.3 percent.
Last year, Mississippi was 0.5 percentage points higher, with the BLS reporting the state’s unemployment rate as being 3.7 percent.
