Most of Mississippi to experience freezing temperatures overnight

posted in: Mississippi News | 0

Nothing goes better together than the winter holiday season and cold weather — and Mississippi is about to be getting some freezing temperatures.

The National Weather Service reports that a majority of the state will be experiencing temperatures at or below 32 degrees, or the freezing point, beginning Tuesday night and running through Wednesday morning.

With extremely cold weather posing several potential problems, experts with the Mississippi Emergency Management are urging residents to prepare as thoroughly as possible for the conditions coming the state’s way.

To be most prepared for extreme temperatures, Mississippians are encouraged to:

  • Wear warm clothing
  • Bring outdoor pets into a heated indoor space
  • Check the tire pressure of vehicles
  • Have anti-freeze available for vehicles
  • Avoid driving, if possible, in the case of icy or frozen roads
  • Have space heaters or generators on standby
  • Insulate pipes with insulation or newspapers and plastic
  • Allow faucets to drip a little during cold weather to avoid freezing
  • Keep cabinet doors open to allow heat to reach pipes
  • Learn how to shut off water valves in case a pipe bursts
  • Have a fire extinguisher available in case of a fire
