Madison-Ridgeland Academy head football coach Herbert Davis is on the road to recovery after undergoing a kidney transplant earlier this week.
Davis, who has been battling stage 5 kidney disease since 2019, went into surgery on Monday in Jackson after a parent of the private school volunteered to be the last piece of a six-person organ swap.
“Through the Lord’s great providence and mercy, a donor match has been established! A donor straight from our MRA Family — Leah Cox,” a portion of an email from MRA officials read before the surgery. “Please pray specifically for Coach Davis and for Leah, as well as for the other donors and recipients.”
On Wednesday, MRA wide receivers coach John Weaver provided an update on social media, saying the surgery went well and Davis is expected to be home as early as Thursday.
Update on Coach Davis:
He is two days post kidney transplant operation and everything is going great.
Game plan is to come home Thursday.

Davis, a five-time state champion with titles at MRA, Brookhaven Academy, and Pillow Academy, missed the first two games of this past season with a kidney infection. He was then readmitted going into the teamβs fourth game before returning to the sidelines in week five and finishing out the year with his team.
