The Mississippi State Department of Health is reporting 1,593 new cases of COVID-19.
Today’s report — one of the highest one-day rises since the onset of the pandemic — brings the state’s total up to 137,396. With the confirmation of 20 additional deaths, 3,601 Mississippians have now passed away from the virus.
With rising case totals, the state’s healthcare system is beginning to show signs of stress. Hospitalizations are also rising and Mississippi is trending toward the lofty numbers of its summer peak.
State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs said Tuesday that hospitals are continuing to delay elective procedures in order to create more available bed space for COVID patients.
As of Monday, 116,683 Mississippians have recovered from COVID-19.
