MSDH confirms 172 new COVID-19 cases, 10 deaths

The Mississippi State Department of Health is reporting 172 new cases of COVID-19. 

The latest report brings the state’s total number of cases up to 311,159. With the confirmation of *10 additional deaths, 7,188 Mississippians have passed away from the virus. 

*MSDH Note: 9 deaths occurred between December 2 and April 20, identified from death certificate reports.

Currently, the MSDH is reporting 323 total variant cases of COVID-19 in Mississippi. The most prominent variant is the U.K. strain with 290 cases followed by the two California variants combining for 27 cases. There are 5 confirmed cases of the Brazil/Japan variant and one case of the South African strain. 

After one day above 200 last week, overall hospitalizations have continued to drop in the days since. 

As of Monday, an estimated 300,323 Mississippians have recovered from COVID-19. Over 1.6 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Mississippi. Make your appointment at covidvaccine.umc.edu
