The Mississippi State Department of Health is reporting 1,942 new cases of COVID-19.
Today’s report—the straight day under 2,000—brings the state’s total up to 243,899. With the confirmation of *31 additional deaths, 5,315 Mississippians have now passed away from the virus.
*MSDH Note: 46 COVID-19 related deaths occurred between October 28, 2020 and January 8, 2021, identified from death certificate reports.
After several days of decline, overall hospitalizations saw an increase in the latest data from the MSDH.
As of Monday, an estimated 198,888 Mississippians have recovered from COVID-19.
On the vaccine front, Governor Tate Reeves announced Tuesday that eligibility has now been expanded to those 65 and older along with Mississippians with underlying health conditions including:
- Cancer
- Chronic kidney disease
- COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
- Down Syndrome
- Heart conditions, such as heart failure, coronary artery disease, or cardiomyopathies
- Immunocompromised state (weakened immune system) from solid organ transplant
- Obesity (body mass index [BMI] of 30 kg/m2 or higher but less than 40 kg/m2)
- Severe Obesity (BMI 40 kg/m2 or higher)
- Pregnancy
- Sickle cell disease
- Smoking
- Diabetes
- Or other medical conditions as determined by your medical provider
