The Mississippi State Department of Health is reporting under 1,000 new cases of COVID-19.
Today’s report of 734 new cases brings the state’s total to just under 288,714. With the confirmation of *37 additional deaths, 6,501 Mississippians have now passed away from the virus.
*MSDH Note: 33 COVID-19 related deaths occurred between November 11 and February 10, identified from death certificate reports.
Hospitalizations continue to decline, and as of Monday, an estimated 264,456 Mississippians have recovered from COVID-19.
Monday, the department did confirm the state’s first case of a COVID-19 variant with the UK strain making its way to Mississippi. While the strain, which has been seen in 40 states, spreads more easily, there is no direct evidence that it causes a more severe infection or a higher risk of death.
MSDH-run vaccination sites remain closed for the second straight day due to the winter storm. Prior to the interruption, over 440,000 total doses of the vaccine had been administered in Mississippi—with 123,000+ people having been fully vaccinated.
