On Monday, the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) reported a three-day total of 9,752 cases of COVID-19 in Mississippi.

The latest report brings the state’s total number of cases to 727,418. With the confirmation of 104 additional deaths (MSDH noted that “most…deaths occurred in the first half of January”), 10,935 Mississippians have passed away from the virus. There are currently 286 ongoing outbreaks in long-term care facilities—14 less than Friday’s report.

While Dr. Mark Horne of the Mississippi State Medical Association hopes to see the number of COVID-19 cases trend downwards like in other states and countries, he told SuperTalk Mississippi News on Monday morning that hospitals across the state are still stressed.

“The worst day that our facility in Laurel had, in terms of numbers in our ER (and) strain on our system, was a little over a week ago. It’s the worst we’ve had in the entire pandemic,” Horne said. “We’ve seen a lower rate of mortality per 100 cases, but there’s so many cases that deaths are still significant.”

While more than 50 percent of residents are fully vaccinated, only 35 percent of those eligible have received a booster.
