Ten Mississippi National Guard soldiers on their way to assist with recovery missions in Louisiana were involved in a multi-vehicle accident in Ridgeland this afternoon.

All ten soldiers, members of the 223rd Engineer Battalion, were taken to the hospital for medical evaluation, as is protocol, but Lt. Col. Deidre Smith clarified that one soldier was treated for minor injuries.

Smith expressed that the Guard is thankful that no one was seriously injured in the crash as the soldiers prepare to assist the citizens of Louisiana following Hurricane Ida.

The case of the crash remains under investigation. WAPT reports that a civilian cut off the convoy on I-55 south.

250 Mississippi National Guard soldiers have been mobilized to assist with debris removal and the distribution of essential supplies.
