Netflix is cracking down on users that share their accounts with a recent release that a penalization fee will be added to accounts that share their passwords with people outside of their household.
Testing for the new feature will start in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru with details of the two changes listed on Netflix’s website:
“Add an Extra Member: Members on our Standard and Premium plans will be able to add sub accounts for up to two people they don’t live with – each with their own profile, personalized recommendations, login and password – at a lower price: 2,380 CLP in Chile, 2.99 USD in Costa Rica, and 7.9 PEN in Peru;
Transfer Profile to a New Account: Members on our Basic, Standard, and Premium plans can enable people who share their account to transfer profile information either to a new account or an Extra Member sub account – keeping the viewing history, My List, and personalized recommendations.”
Increasing prices are not new to Netflix users as the streaming company raised prices for their basic, standard, and premium plans in January.
Rates have been raised slowly since 2014, with the basic price now at $9.99, standard at $15.49, and premium at $19.99. In 2014, rates were $7.99 for the basic plan, $8.99 for standard, and $11.99 for premium.
The rising prices and fees from Netflix are sure to continue as the company competes with other major streaming providers like Hulu, Disney Plus, HBO Max, and more.
