The Mississippi State Board of Education (SBE) is aiming to have a new superintendent of education in place by the end of the calendar year.
On Monday, the SBE released the following timeline:
- August 14, 2023: Application period opens
- September 5-22, 2023: Public survey opens on desired qualities and priorities of new superintendent of education
- October 19, 2023: Application deadline
- December 2023: Candidate interviews and selection
The search process for a new superintendent of education began in April 2022 when Dr. Carey Wright announced her retirement after nine years in the position and 50-plus years in public education.
Movement continued at the top of the state’s education system after the Senate voted to reject Dr. Robert Taylor as state superintendent back in March, citing the amount of time Taylor has spent in-state and his alleged support of “critical race theory.”
Since the decision from lawmakers, there have been two interim superintendents of education, with Dr. Ray Morgigno currently serving in the position. The SBE voted on May 18 to change the rules and allow interim state superintendents to apply for the permanent position.
