After officials announced a lockdown of Keesler Air Force Base Wednesday morning, initial unconfirmed reports indicated that a possible active shooter situation was underway at the Biloxi military base.

Sources on the coast said that gates at the facility were closed off while law enforcement and military personnel conducted an investigation. No injuries have been reported and no evidence of an active shooter has been found at Keesler, authorities say.

“After extensive security operations, no indications of an active shooter or active threat to Keesler AFB have been discovered,” Keesler officials stated in a social media post. “Crews are finalizing their searches as a precautionary measure at this time. The installation is secure, and no injuries have occurred.”

Several Facebook posts from the base’s official account confirmed the lockdown. Keesler AFB was set to conduct a base-wide “readiness exercise” Wednesday, but officials confirmed that the incident and subsequent lockdown were not connected to the exercise.
