A University of Mississippi employee has been arrested and charged with enticement of a child.

The Oxford Police Department began looking into a complaint filed by a citizen against Michael Anthony Smith, 37, on Aug. 20. After further investigation, officers arrested Smith and booked him at the Lafayette County Detention Center.

According to the university’s website, Smith is a graduate of Ole Miss and currently serves as an academic advisor. College advisors are generally tasked with guiding students through the higher education experience and providing insight when it comes to class selection and achieving educational goals.

Ole Miss issued an official statement, noting that university officials were aware of the situation and Smith has been placed on leave and is barred from entering campus.

“The university learned of the arrest late yesterday, and the employee has been placed on leave and is not allowed on campus. The university will provide no further comment at this time,” the statement reads.

Smith will have his bond set at a later date.
