The city of Oxford is coming together to help those impacted by the recent flooding in Texas.

Mayor Robyn Tannehill is encouraging residents to donate non-perishable food, bottled water, new clothing and other essential items to a drive created by local resident Shane Brown. Donations can be dropped off at 945 Highway 334 or at Oxford Urgent Care on University Avenue.

“In a tragedy where no words can even express our emotions, here is an opportunity to help those who need our love and support. Thank you, Shane Brown, for providing this chance for all of us to unite and serve,” Tannehill wrote in a Facebook post.

The deadline for donations to be received is Tuesday night. Brown will deliver donated supplies to survivors in the affected areas, departing from Oxford on Wednesday and returning Friday. He and others helped in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene last year, delivering supplies to Tennessee.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the death toll in Texas had reached at least 109. One of the victims was Oxford native Cindy Nelson Rushing and her husband, James. The couple who lived in Sulphur Springs, Texas, was camping near the Guadalupe River when flash flooding swept through the area. Both were found dead. A GoFundMe campaign has been created to cover their funeral costs.

The catastrophic flash floods, among the nation’s worst in decades, began Friday morning and severely affected Kerr, Travis, Burnet, Kendall, Tom Green, and Williamson counties in the central part of the state.
