The Pearl River Community College baseball team is once again conference champions.

Over the weekend, the Wildcats downed Northwest Community College to secure the program’s sixth Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) title and third conference championship in four years.

“I knew this group would finish it because they deserve it. They have worked so hard,” PRCC head coach Michael Avalon said, noting how much turnover this year’s team had. “If you compare this year’s team to last year, we have nine new starters, four new starting pitchers and relievers. Everything was new, but I knew it would be a tough team to beat when they came together. This group is special.”

The No. 3 nationally-ranked Wildcats wrapped up the regular season – which featured a 29-game winning streak – on Saturday with a 7-1 win over the Rangers. The win was powered by a complete-game effort from freshman starting pitcher Caleb Dyess that included six strikeouts.

“I knew what [Dyess] was going to do when I looked into his eyes before game two,” PRCC pitching coach Brandon Pennington said. “He was ready to go, and it was unbelievable. I’m getting emotional because I know how hard he works. The moment just isn’t too big for him. He competes and does what he knows to do. That’s what makes him special.”

PRCC (46-8) will now host the 2024 Region 23 Tournament from May 13-17 at Dub Herring Park in Poplarville. More details will be released regarding game times and ticket prices at a later date.
