Law enforcement officials are investigating after a newborn baby was dropped off at the Baptist Golden Triangle on Friday.
Columbus Police Chief Joseph Daughtry confirmed to WCBI that the infant was brought to the medical facility wrapped in towels and handed to a nurse by an unidentified male. The chief’s report contradicted rumors that had been swirling about a baby being found in a dumpster at a store near the hospital.
The baby is said to be in good condition. However, authorities are concerned with the mother’s health, noting that she could be in dire need of medical care.
In Mississippi, it is legal to surrender a baby up to 7 days old to an emergency medical services provider — such as a hospital.
