Governor Tate Reeves has set the date of two special elections for vacant judicial seats in the state.
On Tuesday, November 5, 2024, the same date as the 2024 presidential election, voters in the 12th chancery district of Mississippi and the second subdistrict of Hinds County will vote for a judge to preside over certain cases in the respective regions.
If no candidate receives a majority of the votes cast in a special election, a runoff election shall be held three weeks after the special election.
The qualifying deadline for those seeking to preside over those districts is February 1, 2024.
Amanda Trawick Rainey on June 16 was sworn in to serve the 12th chancery district, which encompasses Clarke and Lauderdale counties, in the interim after Judge Larry Primeaux retired on March 31.
Pieter Teeuwissen was sworn in for his position in the second subdistrict of Hinds County last Tuesday. He was appointed by Reeves to fill the vacancy left by the late LaRita Cooper-Stokes — the wife of Jackson city councilman Kenneth Stokes.
