REPORT: Less than 3 percent of Mississippians have flood insurance as Pearl River rises

As the Pearl River is expected to crest on Tuesday, it’s been revealed that less than three percent of Mississippians have flood insurance.

According to the Mississippi Insurance Department (MID), there are about 75,000 flood policies in force, which is less than three percent of the state’s population based on 2021 U.S. Census estimates.

While it typically takes 30 days for a flood policy to go into effect, the MID is encouraging those that already have a policy to begin taking pictures and writing down descriptions of items as well as their price value.

“If you experienced flash flooding this week and already have flood insurance, file an insurance claim as soon as possible,” Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney said. “Once it’s safe to return to your property, document any damage with photos and videos. You should also prepare a list of damaged items in your home and photograph those items as well.”

If you don’t have flood insurance and live in a disaster-prone area, you can contact MID at 1-800-562-2957 or email consumer@mid.ms.gov to find out the best and quickest way to attain a policy.
