Following multiple reports in both Georgia and right here in Mississippi, word is that the Mississippi Braves could be moving.
Over in Columbus, Georgia, city leaders have approved up to $50 million to upgrade its ball field with the hopes of attracting a minor league club. According to the Ledger-Enquirer, the Mississippi Braves are on a short list of five possible suitors.
With attendance down in Pearl and the team’s contract with Trustmark Park set to expire in 2024, according to the Clarion-Ledger, sources have confirmed to SuperTalk Mississippi News that a move isn’t unlikely.
The Mississippi Braves are the only affiliate of the Atlanta Braves not in the Peach State. The franchise houses its Single-A squads in both Rome and Augusta and its Triple-A squad in Gwinnett.
The last time the state lost a minor league team was in 2006 when the Jackson Senators disbanded after the downfall of the Central Baseball League. Mississippi then gained an additional minor league team when the Biloxi Shuckers were founded in 2015.
The Mississippi Braves have played in Pearl since 2005 after relocating from Greenville, South Carolina. The team, nor any of its officials, have responded to a request for comment.
