A Ridgeland police officer has been discharged from the hospital after being struck by a drunk driver on Wednesday.
According to authorities, the officer was on the Interstate 220 ramp near Interstate 55 when hit “at a high speed” by another driver in a brick-laying truck. While the officer was being extricated from his vehicle, the other driver was also being treated by first responders and transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Department, one of the responding law enforcement divisions at the scene, later determined through a blood test that the driver was under the influence of alcohol. He was given a DUI along with citations for no driver’s license and no insurance.
The officer injured in the crash was able to return home to his family on Wednesday night after a brief stint in the emergency room. Identities of those involved have not been released at this time as the investigation into the wreck continues.
