The Ole Miss football team withstood its first road test of the season with a 37-20 win over Tulane, moving the Rebels up three spots to No. 17 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 rankings.
Ole Miss traveled to New Orleans, La., and experienced a series of challenges against the Green Wave, including difficulty moving the ball on the ground and experiencing a halftime deficit.
Nonetheless, the Rebels bounced back in the second half, stealing momentum from Tulane with a fourth-down touchdown reception from Michael Trigg and a successful 56-yard-field goal attempt from Texas A&M transfer Caden Davis.
Ole Miss will have the chance to move even further up the list during Saturday’s home game against a power five opponent in Georgia Tech.
Mississippi State, on the other hand, was not featured in this week’s rankings, despite recording a 31-24 victory over power five opponent Arizona. The Bulldogs jumped to an early lead kickstarted by a stellar defensive performance, but offensive woes would put MSU in a precarious position late in the game.
Though the Bulldogs forced the Wildcats to turn the ball over five times, including two interceptions from linebacker Jett Johnson, the two teams found themselves battling in overtime with Mississippi State holding on to win the ballgame.
MSU did not appear in the rankings but received five votes and will have an opportunity to cement a spot in the rankings with a home match versus No. 14 LSU on Saturday.
