Last week, a nest of sea turtles was discovered at the Pass Christian Harbor by Harrison County Sand Beach crews, making the nesting the first to appear on the Mississippi coastline in four years.
According to the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies (IMMS) in Gulfport, flags have been placed around the nest’s location to protect the eggs from beach maintenance equipment while in the incubation stage. The eggs are estimated to incubate for 50 to 60 days before hatching.
“We kindly request that the public refrains from disturbing the nest,” IMMS stated in a social media post. “We want to thank Harrison County Sand Beach for calling in the report! We will keep everyone updated on this nest especially around the time we expect hatching.”
