The Mississippi Sea Wolves have fired head coach Phil Esposito after just 13 games.
The Sea Wolves, in their first season back on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, are 2-9-2 and sit in last place in the FPHL’s Continental Division.
“Mississippi has waited eight long years for hockey’s return to the Gulf Coast. They are a top-notch fan base who deserve a championship-level product on the ice,” CEO and Director of Hockey Operations Joe Pace, Jr. said. “Our organization is committed to do whatever it takes and make whatever changes necessary to accomplish that goal.”
According to a release from the team, Pace will take over head coaching duties for the remainder of the season, or until a new coach is found. All other staff that was in place under Esposito will remain the same.
Pace, who previously served as both a player and executive for the Sea Wolves, will continue to play as a defenseman while serving as interim head coach. The Northbrook, Ill., native has played professionally for nearly two decades, winning a Commissioner’s Cup in 2016 with the Port Huron Prowlers.
“At this time, I will continue to play on the ice while I work with the team as interim head coach. I am not quite ready to hang up my skates,” Pace said. “We are open to this change and are looking forward to finding the right fit of coach for our team and vision.”
The Mississippi Sea Wolves will be back in action this Saturday against the Elmira Mammoth at First Arena in New York.
