A second person believed to be connected with a shooting at Heidelberg High School that left two dead, including an expectant mother, has been taken into custody.
Jasper County Sheriff Randy Johnson confirmed to WDAM-TV that Damarin Starks, 19, was arrested Monday and charged with one count of accessory after the fact and one count of tampering with physical evidence. Starks is the second teenager to be arrested in the case, the other being Tylar Jarod Goodloe. Goodloe, 18, was arrested Saturday and charged with two counts of capital murder and one count of possession of a deadly weapon on educational property.
Johnson said at least two others are expected to be taken into custody in connection with the shooting that happened on the campus of Heidelberg High School on Friday night. Gunfire erupted after the football team’s homecoming game in Mize with two people found dead, one reportedly on the baseball field and the other near the bleachers. Another person was wounded in the incident.
Jesse Crosby, the deputy coroner in Jasper County, identified the deceased as Chris Newell, 35, and Mikeia McCray, 28.
The shooting in Heidelberg was one of several, albeit unrelated, shootings that made for a deadly weekend across Mississippi.
In Leland, around midnight on Friday, six people were killed and at least 10 others injured when gunfire erupted during a block party downtown celebrating Leland High School’s homecoming. The FBI is asking for the public’s help in identifying four subjects with no arrests announced as of Monday afternoon.
In Lorman, one person was killed and two injured in a shooting on the campus of Alcorn State University. The deceased has been identified as Brekyra Fisher, 29. No arrests had been announced in the case as of Monday afternoon.
