In a strange turn of events, the head football coach at Shaw High School has been reinstated after initially being removed due to an on-field fight between players.
Jerry Walker penned a letter to Warrior fans over the weekend, explaining that he had withdrawn his letter of resignation in hopes of cleaning up the program.
“Following the game, I initially submitted my resignation to the principal. However, after meaningful discussions with our superintendent, Dr. Will Smith, and our principal, Ms. Tracy Dunn, I have decided to withdraw my resignation,” Walker wrote, apologizing for his players’ conduct during last Thursday’s game against Rosa Fort High School.
On top of hiring new assistant coaches, Walker provided a list of possible solutions that include parent meetings, community service, sportsmanship modules, and what he calls “character-building activities.”
“We acknowledge that the behavior witnessed on the field was unacceptable, and we take full responsibility for instilling in our student-athletes the importance of handling conflicts in team sports in a more sportsmanlike manner,” Walker continued. “Shaw High School has a rich history of producing exceptional student-athletes, and we are fully committed to upholding this tradition.”
At this time, it is unclear when football operations will be reinstated at Shaw High School. The Warriors are winless on the season and have been outscored by opponents 70-0 in two games.
