Southern Miss has announced Chip Long as the football team’s new offensive coordinator.
Long, a Division I veteran, comes to Hattiesburg after a one-year stop as an offensive analyst at Louisville. He previously worked as an offensive coordinator at Memphis (2016), Notre Dame (2017-19), Tulane (2021), and Georgia Tech (2022).
“Chip is a proven playcaller with a tremendous resume of offensive success,” Southern Miss head coach Will Hall said. “He has been at the highest level of college football and broken records. His total understanding and command of offensive football, both on the perimeter and in the box were very evident through this process. Our players are going to love playing in this offense.”
Long’s most notable stop came when he was in South Bend. He helped the Irish recover from a 4-8 record in 2016 to go 32-6 over his three seasons with the team, including an appearance in the 2018 College Football Playoff.
Long takes over an offensive unit that was eighth in the Sun Belt last season with 25.3 points per game and tenth with 349.2 yards per game. He is expected to call plays after Hall gave up the responsibility midway through this past season.
Hall and Long have connections at both Tulane, when the two overlapped as coaches in 2021, and North Alabama, where they were teammates from 2002-03.
