Two stargazers were lying in a parking lot looking up at the sky when hit by a Bay St. Louis policeman early Wednesday morning.
According to the Bay St. Louis Police Department, the officer was conducting a routine patrol check of the Washington Street Pier parking lot when he hit the 18-year-old male and 16-year-old female with his vehicle. The department vouched the officer was making a left turn in the unlit area and was not able to see the teens.
The female victim was taken by ambulance to Gulfport Memorial Hospital for treatment of leg and hip injuries while the male victim was taken by private vehicle to get checked for minor injuries. Officials said other individuals, who were friends of the victims, were also in the area at the time of the incident but were inside their car.
Both victims have since been treated and released. The officer involved – whose name has not yet been released – was not injured.
The Waveland Police Department the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office aided other members of the Bay St. Louis Police Department in responding to the scene. Waveland PD has taken over the investigation.
