Statewide redistricting hearings begin this week

posted in: Mississippi News | 0

A series of hearings will be held across the state beginning this week as lawmakers prepare to redraw district lines. Census data released in April was preliminary, but it showed that Mississippi was one of three states to see decreased population. Every 10 years based on the census, lawmakers are tasked with redrawing 52 Senate and 122 House districts.

The Standing Joint Legislative Committee on Reapportionment and the Standing Joint Congressional Redistricting Committee are holding the hearings to obtain citizen comments and suggestions on redistricting efforts.

The redistricting hearings will begin Thursday, August 5th, at Meridian Community College McCain Theatre, at 6 p.m. Subsequent meetings across the state will be held in the following places, all starting at 6 p.m.

  • August 6, 2021: In Tupelo at Itawamba Community College Belden Center, First Congressional District.
