The suspect involved in an hours-long standoff with authorities that left one police officer deceased and one injured has been identified.

22-year-old Gabriel Matthew Wilson, who also died in the shootout, is responsible for injuring Brandon Police Officer and killing former Ridgeland Police Chief Randy Tyler.

According to the Brandon Police Department, Wilson broke into his ex-girlfriend’s Brandon home, holding her and another unidentified female hostage. One of the females was able to escape shortly after authorities arrived. However, the other victim remained held hostage.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) released that the subject began firing shots at police, resulting in the injury of one Brandon police officer.

Hours later, police convinced the man to release the second woman from the house.

Additional agencies, including the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department, Pearl Police, Madison Police, and at least one SWAT team then responded to the location of the standoff.

According to the MBI, the man remained barricaded in the residence with unknown injuries until Randy Tyler with the Madison Police Department entered the home.

Both Tyler and the suspect received fatal injuries, ending the standoff around 10:00 a.m.

The injured officer is currently in stable condition at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

The MBI is assessing the incident and gathering evidence. Upon completing the investigation, agents will share their findings with the Attorney General’s Office.
