Your dog might be grateful for table scraps this Thanksgiving, but some holiday staples can be toxic for your pets.
The Humane Society says they can have turkey, as long as you remove the skin and any gravy first. The skin and gravy can cause pancreatitis. Turkey bones are also a no-no, along with grapes, raisins, chocolate, and onions, which are all toxic to pets.
The American Kennel Club says they can ingest plainly baked or boiled potatoes, sweet potatoes, apples, and peas with plain, boneless turkey as long as there’s no butter or gravy coating it.
Pumpkin is okay, but not pumpkin pie because of the sweetener.
The American Kennel Club listed additional items you should not feed your pet during the holiday season:
- Turkey bones, skin, and gravy
- Stuffing
- Casseroles
- Mashed potatoes
- Creamed peas
- Chocolate, cookies, pies, and sweets (especially anything containing xylitol)
- Alcoholic beverages
- Raisins and grapes
- Onions, scallions, and garlic
- Ham
- Yeast dough
- Fatty foods
- Foods containing spices
