Jackson Public Schools are teaming up with AmeriCorps to launch a Reading Corps and Math Corps program in the fall. They are seeking 30 literary and math tutors to begin in September.
The impact of the coronavirus pandemic on student learning loss is projected to be significantly higher than past years, heightening the need for this proven tutor program. “The school district has been working hard to invest in students,” said Director of Mississippi Programs Karla Edwards. “We are excited to be part of this larger collaborative and to bring this new resource to help more Jackson students succeed.”
Reading Corps and Math Corps are research-based initiatives designed to help every student become a successful reader by the end of third grade or become proficient in math by the end of eighth grade. Tutors are needed at two different levels of commitment: 32 or 21 hours a week.
All tutors receive a stipend every two weeks, plus extra money to pay for college tuition or student loans. Those who are 55 or older may choose to gift their education award to their child, grandchild, stepchild or foster child. Many tutors also qualify for additional benefits like free health insurance and childcare assistance. Applicants can opt to begin in September or January.
No tutoring experience is required, and AmeriCorps provides the necessary training to get started as well as ongoing coaching throughout the year. The application deadline is August 20th to start in September. Anyone interested is encouraged to apply now at readingandmath.org/Mississippi/ or by calling 769-218-8675.
