A tornado is confirmed to have touched down on the Mississippi Gulf Coast as severe storms continue to roll across the state.

The twister was spotted in Diamondhead. According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, chances of additional damaging winds and tornadoes impacting the region are greatest in southeast Mississippi going into Alabama.

Severe weather, including flash flooding, is predicted to continue across the state throughout the remainder of the day with Governor Tate Reeves saying the situation could get worse before it gets better.

“It’s extremely important to keep in mind that our state is expected to experience more severe weather today,” Reeves wrote on X. “There’s a real possibility that the situation could get worse before it gets better. Please prepare in advance of today’s storms – it can be the difference between life and death and keeping your family safe.”

Those in areas under a severe storm advisory are urged to seek shelter immediately. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and its partners have opened safe rooms across the state for those who could be impacted by the inclement weather. Click here for a list.
