Towering tire fire in Jackson ablaze again

posted in: Mississippi News | 0

After firefighters spent Saturday and much of Sunday working to control a fire at a South Jackson tire business, the rubber is blazing again.

A thick plum of smoke coming from the blaze off of East McDowell Road reached into the sky when the fire began, allowing metro residents from as far away as Pearl and Gluckstadt being able to spot the black cloud. Initial reports from the Jackson Fire Department confirmed a building full of rubber tires was burning.

Once again, local firefighters were on the scene as the fire rekindled Monday. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, large-scale tire fires can sometimes take months to fully extinguish. When burned, tires can break down into hazardous heavy metals, gases, and oil – all of which are highly flammable. Significant soil and air pollution can also be an effect of tire fires.
