The University of Mississippi Medical Center UMMC) may soon enter into a negotiation process to lease the Sharkey Issaquena Community Hospital’s facilities.

Earlier this year, the hospital announced plans to seek out a potential buyer after struggling with low patient volumes, later receiving proposals from UMMC and Delta Health System. After evaluation, UMMC was selected over Delta Health System. The decision was due to Delta Health System’s recent closure of its neonatal intensive care until and additional financial issues.

As of now, the Sharkey Issaquena Community Hospital operates clinics, nursing homes, emergency departments, ambulances, and a 29-bed hospital for less than 6,000 residents from the two counties. Sharkey County currently owns two-thirds of the hospital while Issaquena County has the remaining one-third.

Additionally, UMMC has released intentions of leasing facilities at the Greenwood Leflore Hospital, a similarly struggling hospital north of the Sharkey Issaquena Community Hospital. The Greenwood Leflore Hospital has experienced numerous closures and layoffs for months, with the most recent release stating that 40 personnel have been fired and several units will remain closed.
