The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), in collaboration with the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE), is offering free telehealth services for students in all 138 of the state’s school districts.
For the months of June and July, pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade students can see a caregiver by appointment only for a variety of minor medical issues and illnesses. They are also able to schedule an appointment with a licensed counselor for mental health challenges including anxiety and depression.
“When you make the appointment, you just let them know what school your child attends, and that’s all that we require,” UMMC Project Manager Astria Goolsby said on Good Things with Rebecca Turner. “It’s that simple.”
UMMC and the MDE are offering these services to bridge the gap for parents unable to take their children to in-person medical appointments during the summer.
In addition, UMMC is offering both minor medical care and behavioral health care facilitated by school nurses and counselors in 67 school districts throughout the state. School nurses will assess a child’s illness or condition and will recommend telehealth services if the student’s parent is unable to make it to the school in time to take the child to the doctor.
Minor medical care is available from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week, and behavioral health care is available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
