USDA awards $2.9M to support projects in underserved Mississippi communities

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded $2,897,376 to be spread out among five entities in underserved portions of Mississippi.

First announced by Bennie Thompson, the funding, made available by the USDA’s rural development program will go to the Delta Regional Authority, Aaron E. Henry Community Health Service Center, Leflore County Board of Supervisors, Sunflower County Board of Supervisors, and city of Durant.

The money will go toward the following:

  • Delta Regional Authority — $1.5 million — The investment will be used to support personnel and operation expenses to ensure the success and long-term sustainability of these initiatives serving predominantly rural and underserved communities operated by the Delta Regional Authority in Clarksdale.
  • Aaron E. Henry Community Health Service Center — $999,438 — The investment will help to advance health equity, justice, diversity, and inclusion while building the groundwork for stronger community health systems and addressing mental and physical health disparities. The project will provide training, referrals, and support services.
  • Leflore County Board of Supervisors — $168,969 — The investment will be used to assist very low and low-income homeowners, which will include a variety of home repairs and improvement projects for owner-occupied homes in Leflore County.
  • Sunflower County Board of Supervisors — $168,969 — The investment will be used to assist very low and low-income homeowners, which will include a variety of home repairs and improvement projects for owner-occupied homes in Sunflower County.
  • City of Durant — $60,000 — The investment will be used to assist very low and low-income homeowners, which will include a variety of home repairs and improvement projects for owner-occupied homes in Holmes County.
