It was a successful weekend of college baseball for Mississippi’s three major programs.
Ole Miss (4-4) and Mississippi State (4-4) got back on track after suffering midweek losses. Southern Miss (6-2), on the other hand, continued to handle business in its weekend series after a successful midweek showing.
Ole Miss vs. High Point
Game one (Ole Miss 3, High Point 7)
Recap: After trailing 5-0 through four innings, Ole Miss was unable to find enough hitting from its batting rotation to catch up in the series opener at Swayze Field.
Losing pitcher: JT Quinn — Six strikeouts, but five hits, five walks, and five runs surrendered through 3.1 innings pitched in the home loss.
Impact batter: Konni Durschlag (High Point) — Four hits and two scores on five plate appearances.
Game two (Ole Miss 12, High Point 2)
Recap: Hot bats fueled Ole Miss to bounce back from its fourth consecutive loss to end Saturday’s game early via the 10-run rule.
Winning pitcher: Gunnar Dennis — Eight strikeouts recorded, but six hits and two runs allowed through 4.2 innings pitched in the series-saving win.
Impact batter: Jackson Ross — Two hits, two home runs, and five RBIs.
Game three (Ole Miss 25, High Point 2)
Recap: An 11-run 1st inning led the way for a strong offensive showing by the Rebels to win the team’s first series of the 2024 season.
Winning pitcher: Grayson Saunier — Five strikeouts recorded, but three hits and one run given up in the win.
Impact batter: Will Furniss — One hit, one home run (grand slam), and five RBIs.
Mississippi State vs. Georgia Southern
Game one (Mississippi State 5, Georgia Southern 1)
Recap: A dominant showing on the mound from the ace pitcher and a decent performance at the plate from the batting rotation gave Mississippi State its first win of the three-game stint against Georgia Southern.
Winning pitcher: Nate Dohm — 10 strikeouts recorded and no runs allowed through 6.2 innings pitched in the win.
Impact batter: Dylan Cupp — One hit and two RBIs.
Game two (Mississippi State 4, Georgia Southern 11)
Recap: The Bulldogs played from behind all game courtesy of a four-run first inning by the Eagles and were never able to muster up enough successful hitting to catch up.
Losing pitcher: Khal Stephen — Six hits and seven earned runs allowed in 2.1 innings pitched.
Impact batter: Jonathan Jaime (Georgia Southern) — Two hits, one home run, and three RBIs.
Game three (Mississippi State 10, Air Force 2)
Recap: A low-scoring affair to start the game, Mississippi State, trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, exploded offensively, putting 10 on the scoreboard to close out the rubber match with a victory.
Winning pitcher: Jurrangelo Cijntje — Seven strikeouts, but only one hit and one run allowed in the series win.
Impact batter: David Mershon — Four hits, one score, and two RBIs.
Southern Miss vs. Missouri State
Game one (Southern Miss 4, Missouri State 3)
Recap: With things knotted up 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth, Southern Miss scored one run and shut Missouri State’s offense down in the top of the ninth to earn the close Friday victory.
Winning pitcher: Kros Sivley — Two strikeouts and no runs surrendered in 2.2 innings pitched. Ace Nikko Mazza got the start, striking out seven, but allowing seven hits and three earned runs in six innings pitched.
Impact batter: Carson Paetow — Two hits and one RBI.
Game two (Southern Miss 1, Missouri State 3)
Recap: A relatively good day on the mound for the Golden Eagles was not complimented at the plate as Southern Miss was only able to put one run on the board.
Losing pitcher: Ben Riley Flowers — One walk, one hit, and one run given up before being pulled from the game. Billy Oldham got the start, striking out five, but allowing four hits and one run in four innings pitched.
Impact batter: Zack Stewart (Missouri State) — Two hits and one RBI in the low-scoring affair.
Game three (Southern Miss 5, Missouri State 4)
Recap: Southern Miss took a one-run lead in the bottom of the sixth and pitching shut the Bears’ offense down the rest of the way for the Golden Eagles to squeak out the series win in a tight rubber match.
Losing pitcher: Chase Adams — Five strikeouts and no hits or runs allowed in two innings pitched. Will Armistead got the start, striking out seven, but surrendering three hits and four runs.
Impact batter: Davis Gillespie — Three hits, one home run, and two RBIs.
