Law enforcement in Adams County are asking residents not to bother a young bear who’s recently made the southeast Mississippi area its home.
After being flooded with calls concerning the black bear’s presence near businesses in the Natchez area, Adams County deputy Karren Ewing took to social media with a message for those who may encounter the furry wild animal.
“Stay away from him. If you spot him you can call [Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks] and they’ll try to monitor his movements,” Ewing said. “NO they can’t dart him. NO you can’t shoot him. Just leave him be.”
Attempts by authorities to catch the bear proved futile, prompting wildlife officials to ask police to stand back for the time being to allow the wild animal to recover from any trauma it may have experienced from being pursued.
Officials are hopeful that the bear, which is believed to be resting in a wooded area near civilization, will find a more suitable home deeper in the woods or near the Mississippi River. Anyone who spots the bear can call local law enforcement or wildlife authorities at (601)432-2400.
